MY ENDORSEMENT TO PETER ESPINOSA AND FERNANDA GOMES

We are on the verge of a new election, and there is information that you, as responsible voters, need to know at a time when we must change what we dislike and what does not serve our best interests.

Those who know me and have followed our magazine’s journey for over six years know that we have always reported the good, the bad, and the ugly regarding every administration and official. In other words, we have always tried to call things by their proper names, exposing those who mismanage their duties while acknowledging the achievements of those who act for the community’s benefit.

That is why I urge you NOT to vote for candidates Gustavo Garagorry and Maureen Porras for City Council seats 4 and 2, respectively. The information I have on Garagorry indicates that he served as a legislative analyst for Doral in 2014 and later as a legislative assistant to former Councilman Pete Cabrera. For years, he witnessed the misguided actions of Bermúdez and his team; he aligned himself with them and did nothing to solve the very problems he now claims he “can resolve.” Garagorry arrives with a stale narrative promising miraculous solutions to situations this administration has already been addressing effectively; he has no track record of benefiting the city or its residents. Furthermore, he is part of JC Bermúdez’s inner circle, meaning any potential “tenure” in city government would be subject to the directives of his political boss.

While it is true that he is stepping in to fill the seat vacated by Digna Cabral—who, incidentally, is a prime example of what a public official should *not* be (a council member whose tenure was barren, politicized, and harmful to the community)—it is equally true that whoever occupies this seat must bring a solid platform, expertise, and a genuine commitment to honest, hard work! That is why I fully support candidate Peter Espinoza—a qualified individual and U.S. Army veteran who has served his country, embodies Doral’s family roots and values, and is a resident with deep knowledge of the city and its people, as well as a strong commitment to service. I encourage you to read his interview in this issue and to be well-informed before casting your vote.

As for candidate Maureen Porras, little needs to be said, as her track record speaks for itself; the councilwoman leveraged her political allies to secure office in 2022, and once in office, she aligned herself with the city’s adversaries, participated in plots to undermine Christi Fraga’s administration, and revealed that she was following the orders of her political boss, JC Bermúdez, to the letter. In this issue, I invite you to read the report “Chronicle of a Foretold Betrayal,” which details how this Nicaraguan “Mata Hari” made her way onto the Doral City Council, betrayed her friends and campaign colleagues, and—most seriously—betrayed the trust of her constituents. Re-electing Porras—whose performance as a council member has been lackluster, to say the least—would be rewarding disloyalty.

It is our duty to continue supporting Christi Fraga’s administration; we have a moral obligation to acknowledge everything the mayor and her team have done for the city’s residents and to avoid falling for media traps that blame her for actions beyond her or her team’s control. We need a City Council that is united, stands in solidarity with the community, and remains completely free of the political dinosaurs seeking to regain control of the city after losing it due to their own mismanagement.

MI ENDOSO A PETER ESPINOSA Y FERNANDA GOMES
