Destacados líderes de la política en Estados Unidos reaccionaron a la intención del presidente Joe Biden de reestablecer relaciones con el gobierno de Nicolás Maduro por medio de conversaciones que, según la Casa Blanca, tienen como objetivo abordar temas como “La seguridad energética”, tras la disparada de los precios del petróleo a raíz de la invasión de Rusia a Ucrania.

La candidata nicaragüense-americana a la Comisión del condado Miami-Dade, Distrito 12, Sophia Lacayo, dijo que “las justificaciones de la Casa Blanca no son suficientes para el pueblo venezolano que está en ese país viviendo una pesadilla de miseria, hambre y desolación; ni tampoco para los casi siete millones que han tenido que salir de su país en busca de un trabajo para sobrevivir y ayudar a sus familias en Venezuela”.
“El gobierno de Biden demuestra su incapacidad para enfrentarse a Maduro dentro de lo que es una estrategia de defensa continental y ahora busca pretextos en el petróleo para hacer concesiones a un maléfico gobierno, olvidándose del daño que ha causado a millones de venezolanos”, agregó Lacayo.
Por su parte los congresistas en Washington María Elvira Salazar, Mario Diaz-Balart y Carlos Giménez, calificaron de “traición” la aproximación al gobierno de Maduro que además no es reconocido por Estados Unidos como legítimo.
“Esta Administración se muere por encontrar una excusa para hacerse amigos de nuevo con gente que ha destrozado su país en los últimos 20 años”, dijo Salazar.
El congresista Diaz-Balart fue enfático al señalar que Biden quiere ayudar a los dictadores antiestadounidenses del mundo.
“Biden está tratando de vender el futuro de Venezuela, condenar al pueblo de Venezuela a una dictadura. Es una traición que no se ha visto desde los años de (John F.) Kennedy” dijo. “La libertad de Venezuela no es negociable”.
Las críticas no han sido solamente por el lado republicano ya que al interior del partido la intención conciliadora de Biden fue duramente atacada por congresistas y líderes que hasta ahora habían respaldado su gobierno. En el condado Miami-Dade, la alcaldesa Daniela Levine-Cava dijo que “bajo ninguna circunstancia Estados Unidos debe negociar o comprar petróleo venezolano”.
El congresista por Florida Carlos Giménez instó al gobierno a trabajar por la independencia energética ya que “Estados Unidos tiene recursos energéticos suficientes para autoabastecerse y exportar a otras naciones del mundo”.
