History Made: Christi Fraga becomes first woman Mayor elected to lead city of Doral.

History was made as Christi Fraga, with the swearing of the first-ever woman to be voted in as mayor of Doral, after she won the Dec. 13 2022 election. 

A week ago, three runoff races were held in Doral resulting in the election of former Miami-Dade School Board member Christi Fraga had 54.53% of the vote compared to 45.47% for Claudia Mariaca. 

The swearing ceremony attended by hundreds of supporters was celebrated at the City Hall for the new government members. Still, Mrs. Digna Cabral reelected as councilwoman (Seat #4) did not attend the event, and councilmen Oscar Puig-Corve also skipped the historic occasion for the city. Fraga’s supporters consider that both councilmembers wanted to keep their distance from Fraga as they are pawns of former mayor Juan Carlos Bermudez. 

“Not showing up to this event is a way to say that they are following Bermudez giddiness, and they will be opposing most or all proposals coming from Fraga’s allies,” said business owner Joe Marcano. 

New councilmembers Rafael Pineyro and Maureen Porras also attended the swearing ceremony showing their respect to followers and voters.

Pineyro defeated Susie Castillo with about 51.25% of the vote to take Seat 1, while Porras topped Ivette González Petkovich for Seat 2 with 51.84% of ballots cast in her favor.

The newly elected officers have compromised with Doral’s community to eliminate the ordinance 2021-02 that approved a retirement system and benefits that will hurt the finances of the city for good.

“The payments are quite heavy on our budget so I will ask for a special election to take that to a referendum, that’s one issue that I’ll tackle immediately,” candidates said many times during the campaign.
