Las naciones latinoamericanas compiten rápidamente para ganarse el trozo más grande del turismo médico. Los Centros para Control y Prevención de Enfermedades (CDC por sus siglas en inglés) afirman que aproximadamente 2.1 millones de ciudadanos estadounidenses optarán por turismo médico en 2022 gastando cerca de 12 billones de dólares y 50% de esos gastos se realizarán en países latinoamericanos. Los grandes ahorros de 40-70% en casi todas las cirugías mayores atraen a los estadounidenses que están viajando a esos países con el doble objetivo de vacacionar y tratarse. Los destinos son atractivos y el cuidado de salud es de alta calidad. La devaluación de las monedas latinoamericanas ha acabado de endulzar el negocio para los turistas.
En 2019 Colombia ocupó el primer lugar como destino para procedimientos médicos debido al alto nivel de servicios y tratamientos. Entre 2012 y 2021 el turismo médico del país sudamericano aumento en más de 60%. Por décadas ese país ha sido destino favorito para cirugías cosméticas y de acuerdo con un informe de “Global Health Intelligence” casi 400.000 cirugías se realizan cada año.
En el mismo año “El Diario de la Sociedad Americana de Cirujanos Plásticos” realizó un estudio sobre las clínicas de cirugías cosméticas ubicadas en Cartagena. Un total de 658 pacientes internacionales se sometieron a procedimientos de cirugía cosmética entre Febrero de 2013 y abril de 2018. 548 pacientes (83.3%) eran mujeres y 110 (16,7% eran hombres. Los pacientes estaban entre las edades de 16 a 72 años, con 90% de los pacientes ubicados en las edades entre 20 y 54 años. Los pacientes viajaron a Colombia de 34 países diferentes de 6 continentes.
En este estudio fue realizado sólo para una ciudad mediana, como ejemplo de una industria creciente y reveló que Estados Unidos fue la principal fuente de pacientes (66%) con cifras importantes también de Canadá (12%), las isla s del Caribe (11%) y Europa (6%). Los pacientes de Estados Unidos representan 38 estados y el Distrito de Columbia, con la mayor cantidad de pacientes viajando desde Florida, New York, New Jersey, Texas y California. Los pacientes de Canadá vienen de 7 provincias, con el mayor número viajando desde Ontario, Alberta, British Columbia y Montreal. Los pacientes tenían un amplio espectro de ocupaciones, profesionales (25%), gerentes (21%), técnicos y profesionales asociados (14%), y trabajadores de servicios y ventas (14%).
La industria del turismo medico también está creciendo rápidamente atrayendo millones de pacientes que buscan precio y excelencia en los servicios de salud. Es una aproximación integrada y de colaboración entre la salud y la industria del turismo, proveyendo pacientes con una experiencia única que combina tratamiento, servicio y recreación. Los factores que han llevado al incremento de la popularidad de los viajes por salud incluyen el alto costo y la falta de acceso a servicios médicos en sus países de origen, la posibilidad de encontrar proveedores a nivel mundial, la facilidad y costos de viajes internacionales y las mejoras en tecnología y estándares de cuidado en muchos países. El turismo médico representa un nuevo segmento en viajes y cuidado de salud, ofreciendo ahorros sustanciales y representando otro mecanismo de valor para los compradores de servicios médicos. Una encuesta en 2008 realizada entre consumidores de servicios de salud determinó que casi el 40% de los estadounidenses considerarían realizarse procedimientos electivos – no indispensables – en países del extranjero si pudieran ahorrar 50% o más y, si se les asegura que la calidad es igual o mejor de la que pueden tener en Estados Unidos. Un agresivo y continuo crecimiento se espera en la medida que aumenta la demanda y se mejoran los servicios y avances de la medicina para los pacientes.
